This month, Volunteer Spotlight presents a young and resourceful woman who decided to volunteer with Think Africa.
Let’s leave the floor to Nia!
Nia Renee Sullivan is from Seattle, Washington, USA. She is doing her Masters in Social Exclusion and Gender Studies at Abo Akademi University She enjoys long distance running, Latin & African dance, reading and research.
How has it all started?
“Like several people who relocated to Finland, I utilized social media platforms to search for local events, organizations, and dialogue sessions, which ultimately directed me to Think Africa!
In my search for a community outside of the United States, I connected with Think Africa through the Book club. Eventually, I volunteered during Think Africa Week 2020 last November, and for their youth program which centered on identity and culture (youth-summer-camp).”
Why with Think Africa?
“Think Africa’s involvement in varied aspects of promoting diversity and unity is captivating and is why I am excited to volunteer”.
Why Volunteering?
“My interest in volunteering stems from my desire to learn and advocate for underrepresented or influential issues. Through volunteering, I’m able to join collective efforts to improve society. Volunteering in Finland enables me to connect with people and learn about Finnish culture and society”.
Advice for aspiring volunteers
“I would encourage aspiring volunteers to identify, communicate, and offer their skills – while simultaneously being open to learning and/or exploring new opportunities that add value to existing initiatives”.
