This month Volunteer Spotlight #February features Ramya Ramesh. Ramya is originally from India, who has settled in Finland with her husband and a son. She works as Project Manager at KONE Corporation, an international engineering and service company headquartered in Espoo, Finland.

Her values “do your best in whatever you do. Be it work or a relationship” has helped her to connect with Think Africa. It all started when Ramya joined the Think Africa Professional Mentorship Program as a mentee.
“I got to meet nice people through the program. After the program I continued to participate in other events for networking purposes.” She embraced the opportunity to volunteer further when approached to participate during Think Africa Week 2021– the flagship annual event. “I said yes gladly. I volunteered at the first two of the events.”
For Ramya, “Volunteering is important to me because it helps to connect with various groups of people and understand the cultural context in a new country.”
Why Think Africa?
“By volunteering at the Think Africa Week, I learned how to make ourselves, foreigners, part of the Finnish society. I got to understand the smallest details in the new cultural context, connect with people from different backgrounds and learn from their struggles and achievements both personally and professionally”.
“Networking is an important part of the Finland professional culture. I expanded my network through the Think Africa community.”
Advice for aspiring volunteers
“My suggestion to people who want to volunteer at Think Africa is to give their best and volunteer in areas which they are best at, so the organisation also benefits from the same. It also helps to develop yourself personally and professionally.”
Ramya has a wealth of experience in finance, investment projects, compliance, and project management.
